Abstract
A display crystal display includes a liquid crystal display panel, a polarizing plate disposed on at least one surface of the liquid crystal display panel, and a retardation layer disposed between the liquid crystal display panel and the polarizing plate.
Claims19
A liquid crystal display comprising:
- a liquid crystal display panel that includes a first substrate, a second substrate, a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, and a retardation layer disposed on an outer surface of the second substrate;
- a first polarizing plate disposed on an outer surface of the first substrate so that the first substrate is positioned between the retardation layer and the first polarizing plate;
- and
- a second polarizing plate disposed on the retardation layer so that the retardation layer is positioned between the second substrate and the second polarizing plate,
- wherein the retardation layer has refractive indices that satisfy nz<nx=ny, where nx, ny, and nz denote refractive indices in x-, y-, and z-axis directions when one surface of the second substrate is an x-y plane surface defining the x- and y-axis directions and substantially parallel to a surface of the liquid crystal display panel that is configured to display an image, and the z-axis direction is perpendicular to the x- and y-axis directions.

A method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display, comprising:
- forming a liquid crystal layer between a first substrate and a second substrate;
- forming a retardation layer on the second substrate;
- positioning a first polarizing plate on an outer surface of the first substrate so that the first substrate is positioned between the retardation layer and the first polarizing plate;
- and
- positioning a second polarizing plate on the retardation layer so that the retardation layer is positioned between the second substrate and the second polarizing plate, wherein the retardation layer has refractive indices that satisfy nz<nx=ny, where nx, ny, and nz denote refractive indices in x-, y-, and z-axis directions when one surface of the second substrate is an x-y plane surface defining the x- and y-axis directions and substantially parallel to a surface of the liquid crystal display that is configured to display an image, and the z-axis direction is perpendicular to the x- and y-axis directions.
