Abstract
A method on a mobile device for providing an audio output to a user at a determined loudness level is described. A text input is received. A loudness level of an audio output, corresponding to the text input, is determined based on a volume setting of the mobile device and a non-linear adjustment of the volume setting. The audio output is provided to an audio output component at the determined loudness level.

A method in a mobile device, the method comprising:
- receiving a text input;
- determining a loudness level of an audio output, corresponding to the text input, based on a volume setting of the mobile device and a non-linear adjustment of the volume setting;
- and
- providing the audio output to an audio output component at the determined loudness level.

A method in a mobile device, the method comprising:
- receiving a text input from an application component, wherein the application component corresponds to a process identifier and a default audio gain map;
- performing a lookup of the process identifier to determine a persistent application identifier associated with the application component;
- selecting an audio gain map, of a set of audio gain maps for the mobile device, based on the persistent application identifier;
- selecting a volume setting, of a set of volume settings for the mobile device, based on the audio gain map;
- determining a loudness level of an audio output, corresponding to the text input, based on the selected volume setting and the persistent application identifier;
- and
- providing the audio output to an audio output component at the determined loudness level.

- wherein the mobile device is configured to receive a text input;
