Autostereoscopic display system and method

A three-dimensional (3D) display system, comprising:

• a display device configured to display a set of images with parallax for three-dimensional (3D) display;
• and
• a switchable grating comprising a plurality of switchable grating units, each switchable grating unit having variable grating width and variable refractive index and having electric-signal-controllable optical parameters, coupled with the display device, and configured to enable directional light transmission so as to separate lights of the set of images into predetermined viewing directions to effect the 3D display, wherein the switchable grating includes:
• a first substrate having a plurality of first-type electrodes;
• a second substrate having at least one second-type electrode;
• and
• an optical material contained between the first substrate and the second substrate and configured to form the plurality of switchable grating units in the switchable grating when a plurality of voltages are applied to the first-type electrodes and second-type electrode,
• wherein the plurality of voltages are arranged as a series of voltage patterns, each being applied on a number of the plurality of first-type electrodes to form a switchable grating unit with a corresponding width.
