Abstract
A thixotropic agent comprised of a gel which is comprised of a polymeric organic material cross-linked with certain boehmite aluminas having a crystallite size of less than about 100 Å as measured on the 120 plane.

A thixotropic agent comprising:
- a cross-linked gel of a polymeric organic material having free hydroxyl groups and a boehmite alumina having a crystallite size of less than 100 Å as measured on the 120 plane and which in an aqueous dispersion exhibits an Al-27 NMR peak at 80 ppm.
