Abstract
Flow activity is measured on a network device which may be OpenFlow-enabled. A hardware table on the network device, wherein the hardware table includes a record for each flow entry and a hit bit corresponding to each flow entry, is polled for determining status of the hit bit corresponding to each flow entry. An activity measure is updated with the status of the hit bit corresponding to each flow entry.
Claims15
A method of measuring flow activity on an OpenFlow enabled network device, comprising:
- polling a hardware table on the network device, wherein the hardware table includes a record for each flow entry and a hit bit corresponding to each flow entry, for determining status of the hit bit corresponding to each flow entry;
- and
- updating an activity measure with the status of the hit bit corresponding to each flow entry.
A system, comprising:
- an OpenFlow controller;
- an OpenFlow enabled network device coupled to the OpenFlow controller, comprising:
- a module, wherein the module includes an activity measure for each flow entry;
- and
- an Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) table, wherein the ASIC table includes a record for each flow entry and a hit bit corresponding to each flow entry, and further wherein upon polling of the hardware table, the activity measure is updated with the status of the hit bit corresponding to each OpenFlow flow entry.
A network device, comprising:
- an activity measure for each OpenFlow flow entry;
- and
- a hardware table comprising a record for each OpenFlow flow entry and a hit bit corresponding to each OpenFlow flow entry, wherein upon polling of the hardware table, the activity measure is updated with the status of the hit bit corresponding to each OpenFlow flow entry.
A non-transitory processor readable medium, the non-transitory processor readable medium comprising machine executable instructions, the machine executable instructions when executed by a processor causes the processor to:
- poll a hardware table on a network device, wherein the hardware table includes a record for each OpenFlow flow entry on the network device and a hit bit corresponding to each OpenFlow flow entry, to determine status of the hit bit corresponding to each OpenFlow flow entry and
- update an activity measure for each OpenFlow flow entry on the network device with the status of the hit bit corresponding to each OpenFlow flow entry.
