Abstract
Aspects of the invention can provide a display device, a display method, and a projection type display device that allow a characteristic of a display image such as brightness to be continuously changed. The display device can include a light source capable of emitting a plurality of different color lights and a white light, and an optical modulation device for modulating light corresponding to the lights emitted from the light source. The ratio of the period of emitting the white light relative to the total of the periods of emitting the lights from the light source can be variable.
Claims2
A display device, comprising:
- a light source capable of time-sequentially emitting a plurality of different color lights and a white light;
- an optical modulation device that modulates the lights emitted from the light source;
- and
- a controller that varies a ratio of a period of emitting the white light relative to a total of periods of emitting the lights from the light source based on brightness of an image to be displayed by the display device, the image represented by a video signal input to the display device, the different color lights being sequentially emitted in sequential sub unit periods produced by dividing one unit period for producing the image, the sub unit period being initiated by a video signal corresponding to one of the plurality of different color lights, wherein
- each sub unit period includes a first portion that emits one of the plurality of different color lights and a second portion that emits only white light.
A displaying method for a display device comprising:
- providing a light source capable of time-sequentially emitting a plurality of different color lights and a white light within one unit period for producing an image;
- providing an optical modulation device that modulates the lights emitted from the light source;
- varying a ratio of a period of emitting the white light relative to a total of periods of emitting the lights from a light source based on brightness of an image to be displayed by the display device, the image represented by a video signal input to the display device, the different color lights being sequentially emitted in sequential sub unit periods produced by dividing the one unit period for producing the image, the sub unit period being initiated by a video signal corresponding to one of the plurality of different color lights;
- and
- modulating the lights emitted from the light source by the optical modulation device, wherein
- each sub unit period includes a first portion that emits one of the plurality of different color lights and a second portion that emits only white light.
