Abstract
Lipidated micro- or macroparticles are prepared by covalently linking a glycoprotein, typically collagen, with at least one lipid. An amino group in the glycoprotein is joined with a primary amine in the lipid. These particles can be used to encapsulate active ingredients, such as drugs.
Claims20
A method for treating a patient suffering from a pathological condition, comprising administering to the patient in need thereof an effective amount of a lipidated glycoprotein microparticle or macroparticle encapsulating a drug or other biologically active ingredient for which the encapsulated drug or active ingredient is effective in treating the pathological condition, wherein the pathological condition is selected from the group consisting of cancer, bacterial infections, fungal infections, viral infections, parasite infections, prion infections, osteoarthritis, and osteomyelitis and wherein the lipidated glycoprotein microparticle or macroparticle has a solid porous interior and comprises the reaction product of at least one amino-containing glycoprotein covalently bound with at least one lipid having a primary amino group.
In a method for treating an indication with a drug that is effective for treating said indication, the improvement wherein said drug is administered encapsulated in a lipidated glycoprotein microparticle or macroparticle having a solid porous interior and comprising the reaction product of at least one amino-containing glycoprotein covalently bound with at least one lipid having a primary amino group.
