A system and method for document management are provided in which documents are managed in a file/document sharing system.

A file system, comprising:
- a public file system having a plurality of files stored in the public file system, each file being associated with a user;
- a document management system coupled to the public file system, the document management system being a user of the public file system for a plurality of managed files stored on the public file system;
- and
- the document management system controlling access to the managed files stored on the public file system.

- storing, on a public file system, a plurality of files, each file being associated with a user;
- storing, on the public file system, a plurality of managed files wherein each of the managed filed is associated with a document management system that is the user in the public file system;
- and
- controlling, by the document management system, the managed files stored on the public file system.
