Abstract
Methods and apparatuses for an inversion process in an imaging process, in which 3-D surface models are used to explicitly represent complex boundaries, in which the 3-D surface models and the gridded models are linked by projection and model gridding, and in which the 3-D surface models and the gridded models are updated during inversion.

A method for inversion of a 3-D property model in which a 3-D structural model containing an explicit representation of boundary surfaces is built to represent a 3-D structure, the method comprising:
- generating a gridded model from the 3-D structural model;
- projecting a gridded model gradient obtained from inversion back to a surface position and shape parameter gradient in the 3-D structural model;
- and
- computing an update to the surface position and shape parameters in the 3-D structural model.
