Abstract
A resonant radio frequency diathermy heat applicator, including a flexible pad, an inductive coil with moderate defined resistance, fixed tuning capacitors, connecting cable and shielding that is broadly tuned to the signal source in a manner that eliminates the requirement for variable tuning elements.
Claims20
A diathermy applicator for delivering controlled heating to a physical system comprising
- an inductive coil of wire
- a source of RF power connected to said applicator;
- and
- wherein
- said system exhibits an electromagnetic resonant frequency ωl
- said system detunes spontaneously during delivery of said heating,
- the system resonant frequency is tuned according to an impedance matching,
- the system and coil exhibit a combined RF resistance Rs as seen from said source of RF power,
- said resistance is selected so as to broaden a resonant bandwidth substantially characterized according to ωl/Rs=Q of said coil resonant frequency ωl so as to maintain said impedance matching across a broad range of said detuning;
- and
- wherein said impedance matching comprises adding resistance to the coil
