Abstract
Improved coating formulations for cementitious composite building materials are disclosed herein. The coating formulations provide both sealer and primer functions, particularly for substrates in a high alkaline environment, such as fiber cement composite materials. The coating formulations can be applied in a cost-effective single step; exhibit improved adhesion, blocking resistance, water resistance characteristics
Claims19
A multi-functional coating formulation for cementitious composite materials, comprising:
- up to 80% by weight of a polymer binder, wherein the polymer binder comprises at least one emulsion, each emulsion containing at least one reactive functional group;
- up to 35% by weight of at least one functional pigment, wherein the at least one functional pigment comprises an inorganic compound having an average particle size of 12 microns (urn) or less and an oil absorption of 17 or less;
- wherein the coating formulation has a pigment volume concentration of about 40% or less;
- and
- wherein the coating formulation functions as a sealer and a primer on a cementitious substrate.
A coating formulation for cementitious composite materials comprising:
- up to 80% by weight of at least one polymer, wherein said polymer is a thermosetting or thermoplastic polymer, said polymer has a glass transition temperature of 50° C. to 70° C. and a minimum film formation temperature of 30° C. or less than 30° C.;
- up to 35% by weight of at least one pigment;
- up to 15% by weight of at least one filler;
- and
- wherein the coating formulation has a pigment volume concentration of 30% or less, wherein the coating formulation functions as a sealer and primer for the cementitious composite material.
A fiber cement composite material, comprising:
- a fiber cement substrate comprising a cementitious matrix and fibers, said fiber cement substrate having an exterior surface;
- a layer of multi-functional coating system disposed on the exterior surface, said multi-functional coating system is a primer-sealer comprising a thermosetting or thermoplastic polymer binder system, at least one functional pigment, and at least one filler, wherein the functional pigment and the filler have an average particle size of 12 μm or less and oil absorption of 17 or less;
- a top coat layer disposed on the layer of primer-sealer;
- and
- wherein the multi-functional coating system penetrates the exterior surface of the fiber cement substrate.
