Abstract
The invention includes methods and compositions for treating an animal to inhibit the incidence and growth of E. coli O157:H7 and other pathogenic bacteria. The treatment method comprises administering a therapeutically effective amount of Lactobacillus animalis or one or a combination of a number of other probiotic bacteria to an animal. An alternative treatment method comprises administering a therapeutically effective amount of a lactic acid producing bacterium such as Lactobacillus animalis in combination with a lactate utilizing bacterium such as Propionibacterium freudenreichii.
Claims24
A composition for treating or inhibiting a pathogenic infection caused by a pathogenic bacterium in a ruminant, said composition comprising a Lactobacillus animalis bacterium.
A composition for treating or inhibiting a pathogenic infection caused by a pathogenic bacterium in a ruminant, said composition comprising a Lactobacillus animalis bacterium and a Propionibacterium freudenreichii bacterium, wherein said Lactobacillus animalis bacterium consists of strain LA51 and said Propionibacterium freudenreichii bacterium consists of strain PF24.
A method of inhibiting an intestinal pathogenic infection in a ruminant, the method comprising (a) administering to said ruminant a composition that inhibits the growth of the pathogenic bacterium in the ruminant, said composition comprising a Lactobacillus animalis bacterium.
