Implementing a consistent ordering of operations in collaborative editing of shared content items

A system comprising:

• a processor;
• and
• a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored therein processor-executable instructions for causing the processor to:
• receive an edit operation from a first client, the edit operation applying to a content item that is shared for collaborative editing between the first client and a second client;
• send the edit operation to the second client;
• receive an update from the second client, comprising a transform of a previous edit operation performed by the second client according to an effect of the edit operation of the first client;
• send the update to the first client;
• and
• update a list of edit operations for the content item based on edit operations and updates received from the first client and the second client.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored therein processor-executable instructions for causing the processor to:

• receive an edit operation from a first client, the edit operation applying to a content item that is shared for collaborative editing between the first client and a second client;
• send the edit operation to the second client;
• receive an update from the second client, comprising a transform of a previous edit operation performed by the second client according to an effect of the edit operation of the first client;
• send the update to the first client;
• and
• update a list of edit operations for the content item based on edit operations and updates received from the first client and the second client.
