Available, scalable, and tunable document-oriented storage services

A system of interfacing applications with document services on a device having a processor and a memory, the system comprising:

• a runtime set comprising runtimes respectively comprising instructions stored in the memory of the device, the runtime set comprising:
• a device service runtime interacting with document services provided on the device;
• a local service runtime interacting with document services accessible to the device over a local-area network;
• and
• a remote service runtime interacting with document services accessible to the device over a wide-area network;
• and
• a runtime selecting component comprising instructions stored in the device that, when executed on the processor, cause the device to, upon receiving a request from an application to access a selected document service:
• identify a context of the selected document service, and
• invoke a selected runtime of the runtime set associated with the context of the selected document service.

A nonvolatile computer-readable storage device storing instructions that, when executed on a processor of a device, cause the device to interface applications with document services by:

• storing in the memory of the device a runtime set comprising:
• a device service runtime interacting with document services provided on the device;
• a local service runtime interacting with document services accessible to the device over a local-area network;
• and
• a remote service runtime interacting with document services accessible to the device over a wide-area network;
• and
• upon receiving a request from an application to access a selected document service:
• identifying a context of the selected document service, and
• invoking a selected runtime of the runtime set associated with the context of the selected document service.
