Abstract
Pacing parameters may be adjusted to increase the cardiac output of a patient's heart while a patient is awake and/or active and the demand placed on the heart may be greatest, and to decrease or hemodynamic efficiency while a patient is at rest so that the heart itself has time to rest before the next period of higher demand for efficiency begins. This may aid in lessening the strain placed on the heart by making the heart work hard when needed such as when the patient is active, and by permitting the heart to “rest” when the patient is relatively inactive.
Claims20
A method for pacing a heart of a patient, the method comprising:
- during a first period of time, pacing the heart to increase the left ventricular contractility to produce an increased cardiac output;
- and
- during a second period of time, pacing the heart to decrease the left ventricular contractility relative to the left ventricular contractility achieved during the first period of time to produce a reduced cardiac output.
A method for pacing a heart of a patient, the method comprising:
- during a first period of time, pacing the heart to increase the cardiac work of the heart;
- and
- during a second period of time, pacing the heart to decrease the cardiac work of the heart relative to the cardiac work achieved during the first period of time.
A method for pacing a heart of a patient via an implantable pacing device, the method comprising:
- estimating a current cardiac load on the heart via the implantable pacing device;
- identifying a set of pacing parameters that correspond to the estimated current cardiac load on the heart via the implantable pacing device;
- pacing the heart using the identified set of pacing parameters via the implantable pacing device;
- and
- repeating the estimating, identifying and pacing steps on an on-going basis.
