Abstract
The disclosed screw assemblies include a screw that attaches onto the bone, a housing member that connects and inter-locks the bone screw to the rod, and one or more locking members that permit immobilization of various components of the assembly relative to one another while still permitting some relative movement. The bone screws and bone screw assemblies described herein permit flexible stabilization of the spine.

A method of stabilizing a spine of a living subject, comprising:
- providing a first fixation assembly including a first housing, a first bone screw, and a rod;
- securing said first fixation assembly to a first spine segment such that said first bone screw is fixated to said first spine segment;
- and
- locking said first fixation assembly such that said rod is immobilized relative to said first housing while said first bone screw can move from an initial orientation to a different orientation relative to said rod in response to application of a load on said first bone fixation assembly, and wherein said first bone screw is automatically urged toward said initial configuration when said load is removed.

A method of stabilizing a spine of a living subject, comprising:
- securing a first bone screw of a first fixation assembly to a first portion of said spine;
- locking a rod portion of said first fixation assembly such that it is substantially immobilized relative to a first housing of said first fixation assembly;
- and
- applying a load on said first bone fixation assembly, said first bone screw moving from a first orientation to a second orientation relative said rod in response to said act of applying said load;
- wherein, upon removal of said load, said first bone screw is automatically urged toward said first orientation.
