Abstract
A surgical tool arrangement for performing endoscopic surgical procedures which includes a powered handpiece and a cutting accessory which detachably connects to the handpiece. The cutting accessory has a distal end which defines a cutting head incorporating a suction arrangement directly adjacent the cutting features thereof.
Claims23
A surgical cutting accessory configured for attachment to a surgical handpiece, said accessory comprising a cutting element having a proximal end and a distal end including a generally helically oriented cutting edge, said distal end defining therein a plurality of discrete openings disposed in a spaced-apart manner with one another adjacent and along said cutting edge such that said openings are oriented in said distal end in a generally helical manner with one another.
A surgical cutting accessory for attachment to a surgical handpiece, said accessory comprising an elongate drive shaft having a proximal end configured for cooperation with a drive member of a powered surgical handpiece and a distal end defining a cutting head thereon, said cutting head defining a longitudinal axis and including a generally cylindrical wall having an exterior surface and defining a hollow interior in communication with a source of suction, a plurality of cutting edges disposed on said exterior surface and extending generally helically about the axis, said wall including a plurality of wall portions each extending between and interconnecting a pair of adjacent said cutting edges, one of said wall portions defining therein at least one suction opening in communication with said interior, said suction opening being disposed closely adjacent one of said cutting edges.
A surgical tool assembly comprising:
- a cutting accessory configured for being attached to and driven by a powered surgical handpiece, said accessory comprising:
- an outer housing assembly including a hub defining a proximal end of said outer housing assembly and configured for cooperation with a coupling arrangement provided on a powered surgical handpiece, an elongate and generally tubular housing element having a proximal end connected to said hub and an open distal end;
- and
- a cutting element assembly including a hub defining a proximal end of said cutting element assembly and configured for cooperation with a drive member of a powered surgical handpiece, an elongate drive shaft disposed within said housing element for movement relative thereto and having a proximal end connected to said hub of said cutting element assembly, a distal end spaced therefrom and a hollow interior portion in communication with a suction source, said cutting element assembly further including a cutting head defining a longitudinal axis and disposed at said distal end of said drive shaft and adjacent said open distal end of said housing element, said cutting head defining thereon at least one cutting feature extending generally helically about the axis and defining a generally helically-oriented cutting edge, and said cutting head defining a plurality of suction openings disposed in a row oriented closely adjacent said cutting edge and following a helix angle thereof, said suction openings each opening inwardly for communication with said interior portion of said drive shaft and opening outwardly sidewardly in a direction transverse to the axis.
A surgical cutting accessory configured for attachment to a surgical handpiece, said accessory comprising a cutting element defining a longitudinal axis and having a proximal end and a distal end spaced from said proximal end, said distal end including a plurality of cutting edges extending helically about the axis, and said distal end defining an opening having a portion disposed in one of said cutting edges so as to interrupt said one cutting edge.
A surgical cutting accessory for attachment to a surgical handpiece, said accessory comprising an elongate drive shaft having a proximal end configured for cooperation with a drive member of a powered surgical handpiece and a distal end defining a cutting head thereon, said cutting head defining a longitudinal axis and including a generally cylindrical wall having an exterior surface and defining a hollow interior in communication with a source of suction, and a plurality of cutting edges disposed on said exterior surface and extending generally helically about the axis, said wall including a plurality of wall portions each extending between and interconnecting a pair of adjacent said cutting edges, one of said wall portions defining therein at least one suction opening in communication with said interior, said suction opening having a portion disposed in one of said cutting edges so as to interrupt said one cutting edge.
A surgical cutting accessory for attachment to a surgical handpiece, said cutting accessory comprising a drive shaft having a proximal end configured for cooperation with a drive member of a powered surgical handpiece and a distal end defining a cutting head thereon, said cutting head defining a longitudinal axis and including a generally cylindrical wall having an exterior surface and defining a hollow interior in communication with a source of suction, and a plurality of cutting edges disposed on said exterior surface and extending generally axially, said wall including a first wall portion defining therein a suction opening in communication with said interior and having a thickness dimension oriented transverse to the axis and adjacent said suction opening, and a second wall portion disposed adjacent said first wall portion and said suction opening, said second wall portion having a thickness dimension oriented transverse to the axis which is substantially greater than said thickness of first wall portion.
A surgical cutting accessory for attachment to a surgical handpiece, said cutting accessory comprising a drive shaft having a proximal end configured for cooperation with a drive member of a powered surgical handpiece and a distal end defining a cutting head thereon, said cutting head including a generally cylindrical wall defining an interior and a plurality of generally linear cutting edges disposed on an exterior surface of said wall and extending generally axially along said cutting head, said wall including a plurality of wall portions each extending between and interconnecting a pair of adjacent said cutting edges, one of said wall portions defining therein a plurality of discrete suction openings in communication with said interior and disposed in a spaced-apart manner with one another adjacent one of said cutting edges.
