Abstract
An atherectomy device is disclosed herein. The atherectomy device includes a first drive shaft, a second drive shaft, a handle assembly, and a cutting member. The first drive shaft extends distally from the handle assembly and includes the cutting member mounted on a distal end region of the first drive shaft. The second drive shaft extends distally from the handle assembly to a distal end of the second drive shaft such that both the first and the second drive shafts are rotatable relative to the handle assembly, and the first drive shaft is rotatable independent of the second drive shaft.
Claims20
An atherectomy device comprising:
- a first drive shaft extending distally from a handle assembly and having a cutting member mounted on a distal end region of the first drive shaft;
- a second drive shaft extending distally from the handle assembly to a distal end of the second drive shaft;
- wherein the first drive shaft is rotatable relative to the handle assembly;
- wherein the second drive shaft is rotatable relative to the handle assembly;
- and
- wherein the first drive shaft is rotatable independent of the second drive shaft.
An atherectomy device comprising:
- a handle assembly;
- a rotatable drive shaft extending distal from the handle assembly and rotatable relative to the handle assembly about a rotational axis;
- a cutting member disposed on a distal end portion of the rotatable drive shaft, wherein the cutting member is formed of an elastically deformable material;
- a weight positioned with the cutting member and having a center of mass eccentrically located relative to the rotational axis;
- wherein when the rotatable drive shaft is rotated at a rotational rate above a threshold rotational rate, centrifugal forces acting on the weight cause the cutting member to deform radially outward from the rotational axis.
A method of forming an opening through an occlusion in a blood vessel, comprising:
- advancing a cutting member of a rotatable cutting device to a location proximate an occlusion, the cutting member mounted to a first drive shaft of the rotatable cutting device;
- rotating the first drive shaft while advancing the cutting member through the occlusion;
- and
- rotating a second drive shaft of the rotatable cutting device to initiate vibration of the cutting member while advancing the cutting member through the occlusion.
