Abstract
A bodily fluid collection system may include a canister fluidly connected to a dressing at a tissue site through an inlet. The canister may also be fluidly connected to a reduced pressure source through an outlet. At least a portion of the wall of the canister may be a membrane and may have the open edge of a flexible bag container fixed to the canister surrounding the perimeter of the membrane. The flexible bag may contain an osmotic agent capable of drawing absorbent from bodily fluid in the canister through the membrane and into the flexible bag.
Claims32
A fluid collection device for collecting bodily fluids from a tissue site using reduced pressure, the fluid collection device comprising:
- a support member having an inlet adapted to be in fluid communication with a dressing disposed at the tissue site and an outlet adapted to be in fluid communication with a source of reduced pressure;
- a container coupled to the support member and in fluid communication with the inlet and the outlet of the support member;
- a membrane disposed between the container and the support member;
- and
- an osmotic agent disposed within the container.
A fluid collection system comprising:
- a dressing adapted to be in communication with a tissue site;
- a canister in fluid communication with said tissue site and in fluid communication with a reduced pressure source, wherein a portion of said canister comprises a membrane, and wherein said canister is adapted to accept bodily fluid from said tissue site;
- a container having an opening with an edge, said edge mated to said canister surrounding said membrane;
- and
- a hypertonic solution located within said container, said hypertonic solution adapted to draw absorbent from said bodily fluid in said canister through said membrane.
A method for reducing the volume of bodily fluid collected, the method comprising:
- creating a reduced pressure within a canister to draw bodily fluid from a tissue site to said canister through an inlet, said canister having an outlet and a liquid-air separator associated with said outlet;
- osmosing absorbent from the bodily fluid in said canister into a container attached to said canister;
- and
- removing the absorbent from said container.
A bodily fluid collection device comprising:
- a canister comprising an inlet for fluid communication with a dressing at a tissue site, an outlet for fluid communication with a reduced pressure source, and a chamber defined by a wall, said wall comprising a lattice, said lattice having a surrounding edge;
- a membrane adhered to said lattice, said membrane having a textured surface and operable to prevent microorganisms from traversing therethrough;
- a variable volume container affixed to said wall of said chamber and encompassing said surrounding edge of said lattice, wherein said variable volume container is in communication with said canister through said membrane, said variable volume container comprising a valve in communication with atmosphere;
- and
- an osmotic agent located within said container, said osmotic agent being combined with a water soluble bonding agent.
