Abstract
The present application provides methods for decarboxylation of amino acids via imine formation with a catalyst under superheated conditions in either a microwave or oil bath.
Claims23
A method for decarboxylation of amino acids, the method comprising:
- combining, in a pressurized reaction vessel, a mixture of an amino acid, a solvent, and a catalyst;
- and
- heating the mixture at about 180° C., or more, for about 5 minutes, or more, wherein the solvent has a lower boiling point than cyclohexanol and does not produce a maximum vapor pressure exceeding the vessel limit,
- wherein the amino acid is converted to its imine.

A method for decarboxylation of amino acids, the method comprising:
- combining, in a pressurized reaction vessel, a mixture of an amino acid, n-propanol as solvent, and from about 0.1 to about 2 mol equivalents of R-carvone as catalyst;
- and
- heating the mixture in a microwave to a temperature of about 180° C. to about 195° C. for about 5 minutes, or more;
- optionally heating the mixture in the microwave to a temperature of about 180° C. to about 195° C. for up to an additional 25 min;
- cooling the reaction vessel to a temperature below the boiling point of n-propanol;
- adding an acid to the reaction mixture in the vessel;
- and
- re-heating the acid reaction mixture in the microwave to a temperature of about 180° C. to about 195° C. to hydrolize the imine to form an amine and to convert unreacted carvone to carvacrol.

- and re-heating the acid reaction mixture in the oil bath at a temperature of about 180° C. to about 195° C. to hydrolize the imine to form an amine and to convert unreacted carvone to carvacrol.
