A method for screening a cardiac patient as a candidate for stem cell therapy, said method comprising measuring in a biological sample from the patient the amount of one or more of apolipoprotein E precursor, atriopeptigen (ANP, ANF), adrenomedullin, brain acid soluble protein 1 (BASP1 protein), cathepsin B precursor, collagen alpha-1 (VI) chain precursor, connective tissue growth factor, cystatin E/M, Dkk3 protein, insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 2 precursor, interleukin-1 receptor-like 1 precursor (ST2), matrix metallopeptidase 2, metalloproteinase inhibitor 1 precursor (TIMP-1), metalloproteinase inhibitor 2 precursor (TIMP-2), mimecan precursor, procollagen type III alpha 1, procollagen type V alpha 1, procollagen type 1 alpha 1, procollagen type VI alpha 2, tropoelastin, or peptide fragments thereof, compared to a baseline value, wherein a statistically significant amount of the one or more proteins or peptide fragments thereof compared to the baseline value indicates that the patient would be likely to benefit from stem cell therapy.
