Abstract
The present invention comprises a process to produce organic products from a single-carbon substrate; microbial compositions used in the process; and a process to isolate microorganisms for the process.
Claims20
An isolated chemoautotrophic bacterium that grows on a single-carbon substrate as sole carbon source, and produces a multi-carbon organic product.
A process for producing a multi-carbon organic product from a single-carbon substrate comprising:
- a) culturing microorganisms comprising a chemoautotrophic bacterium that grows on a single-carbon substrate as sole carbon source in a fermentation broth in a reactor vessel with the single-carbon substrate and a reducing agent;
- b) supplying the single-carbon substrate and reducing agent to the reactor vessel;
- and
- c) said culturing and supplying steps causing the microorganisms to produce the multi-carbon organic product.
A method to isolate a chemoautotrophic bacterium that grows on a single-carbon substrate as a sole carbon source, and produces a multi-carbon organic product, said method comprising steps:
- a) enriching a culture of microorganisms in a medium with the organic product;
- b) growing said culture of microorganisms with a reducing agent and the single-carbon substrate as sole carbon source under conditions favoring synthesis of the organic product;
- and c) isolating a microorganism that grows in both steps “a” and “b”.
The method of claim 17, wherein the reducing agent is hydrogen gas.
