Abstract
A method of determining the stage (gestation) of a pregnancy—comprising the steps of quantifying the amount of the hormone hPL or a fragment thereof in a body fluid sample derived from a human female selected from a blood, plasma, serum and/or urine sample, and establishing the stage of pregnancy corresponding thereto. The disclosure also extends to a device adapted to detect the levels/amount of hPL or a fragment thereof in a body fluid sample, derived from a human female, selected from a blood, plasma, serum and/or urine sample, for establishing the stage of pregnancy.

1-13. (canceled)
A disposable device adapted to determine an amount of human placental lactogen (hPL) from a urine test sample to assist in determining the stage of pregnancy, the device comprising:
- a sampling zone wherein the urine test sample is introduced;
- a testing zone in fluid communication with the sampling zone, the testing zone including reagents for an immunoassay,
- the reagents selected from the group comprising an anti-hPL antibody, an anti-hPL antibody binding fragment and a label, wherein at least one reagent is attached to a solid phase;
- and
- a detector adapted to detect information from the testing zone to assist in determining the amount of hPL.
The device of claim 1, wherein the anti-hPL antibody or an anti-hPL antibody binding fragment is attached to a solid phase,
A disposable device for measuring human placental lactogen (hPL) in a urine sample said device comprising:
- (i) a sample zone where a urine test sample is introduced,
- (ii) a test zone in fluid communication with the sample zone, said test zone including at least one reagent, the reagents selected from the group comprising an antibody specific to hPL, an antibody binding fragment specific to hPL and a label, wherein the anti-hPL antibody or binding fragments thereof are attached to a solid phase, and arranged as an immunoassay, such that an analyte in the form of hPL and/or detectable fragments thereof are bound by the reagent and the bound analyte accumulates labelled in the test zone,
- (iii) a detector for detecting the amount of the labelled analyte accumulated in the test zone, wherein the detector generates a signal based on the amount of labelled analyte detected, and
- (iv) circuitry connected to a readout display, wherein the circuitry processes a signal generated from the detector and displays in a readout window a numerical value related to a stage of pregnancy for a signal based on the amount of labelled analyte detected.
