Abstract
A pressure-balanced enclosure for subsea use, and in particular for use as a submersible junction box in which subsea cables can be joined. The apparatus maintains a balanced pressure within the termination chamber; it is field installable, testable, and repairable. The termination chamber is not oil-filled; instead, it is substantially filled with a solid particulate fill material which includes a portion of elastomeric material.
Claims8
A pressure-balanced enclosure comprising:
- a sealed chamber having a pressure compensator adapted to compensate the pressure within the chamber to approximately the pressure outside of the enclosure,
- and, a fill material within the chamber, wherein the fill material comprises a solid particulate material, wherein a portion of the fill material includes an elastomeric material.
A pressure-balanced junction-box comprising:
- a housing having a first end for sealably receiving an end of a cable, and a second end;
- the housing having a chamber wall defining an internal chamber;
- the cable carrying at least one conductor, each conductor having an end extending into the internal chamber;
- and
- a fill material within the chamber, wherein the fill material comprises a solid particulate material, wherein a portion of the fill material includes an elastomeric material.
