Method and Apparatus for Determining Tunable Parameters to Use in Power and Performance Management

A method comprising:

• determining an operational state of an integrated circuit (IC), wherein said determining comprises a management unit monitoring determining respective operational states of each of a plurality of functional blocks;
• providing information indicative of the operational state of the IC to a local block manager in each of the plurality of functional blocks;
• and
• selecting, in the local block manager of at least one of the plurality of functional blocks, one or more tunable parameters based on the information indicative of the operational state of the IC.

An integrated circuit comprising:

• a plurality of functional units each having a local power manager circuit;
• and
• a global power manager circuit coupled to each of the plurality of functional units, wherein the global power manager circuit is configured to provide an indication of an operational state of the integrated circuit to each of the plurality of functional units;
• wherein each local power management circuit of a respective one of the plurality of functional units is configured to select one or more tunable parameters based on the indication of the operational state provided by the global power manager circuit.

A method comprising:

• periodically determining local operating states of each of a plurality of functional units of an integrated circuit (IC);
• determining a global operating state of the IC based on the local operating states of each of the plurality of functional units;
• providing information indicating the global operating state of the IC to respective local power managers of each of the plurality of functional units;
• and
• selecting, in the respective local power manager of one or more of the functional units, at least one timeout period indicating a duration that each of the one or more functional units is to remain idle before requesting to be placed into at least one of first and second sleep states.

An integrated circuit comprising:

• a plurality of functional units each having a respective local power management circuit;
• and
• a global power management circuit configured to periodically determine respective local operating states of each of a plurality of functional units, determine a global operating state based on the respective local operating states, and provide information indicative of the global operating state to the respective local power management circuits of each of the plurality of functional units;
• wherein the respective local power management circuits of each of the plurality of functional units is configured to select at least one timeout period indicating a duration that its corresponding one of the plurality of functional units is to remain idle before requesting to be placed into at least one of first and second sleep states.
