Abstract
The present invention is in the field of producing organic acids and other useful chemicals via biological fermentation using glycerol as a source of carbon. Novel microorganisms and fermentation processes are described that are capable of converting glycerol to useful organic acids in high yield and high purity.
Claims22
A microorganism genetically engineered for production of a chemical of commercial interest from glycerol as a carbon source, wherein said microorganism comprises a deregulated glycerol utilization pathway, and said glycerol utilization pathway comprises a facilitated glycerol diffuser, a glycerol kinase, and a glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase.
The microorganism of claim 4 or 5 wherein said mutation or deletion is in a glpR gene.
