Abstract
Provided are methods for making adhesive coated orthodontic appliances having a silane treated metallic bonding surface, and related assemblies. Exemplary methods of making an adhesive coated orthodontic appliance include providing a metallic bonding surface on the orthodontic appliance for attachment to a tooth surface, sand blasting the bonding surface with a silica-based media, functionalizing the bonding surface in the presence of a pH-modified coupling agent solution, and applying an adhesive onto at least a portion of the bonding surface, where the adhesive is a hydrophilic adhesive having a water uptake of at least 0.5 percent of its original weight after hardening.
Claims20
A method of making an adhesive-coated orthodontic bracket comprising:
- providing a metallic bonding surface on the orthodontic bracket for attachment to a tooth surface;
- sand blasting the bonding surface with a silica-based media;
- functionalizing the bonding surface in the presence of either an acid-modified silane coupling agent solution having a pH less than or equal to 5.0 or a base-modified silane coupling agent solution having a pH greater than or equal to 8.0;
- and
- applying an adhesive onto at least a portion of the bonding surface, the adhesive having an average water uptake of at least 0.5 weight percent relative to its original weight after hardening.
A method of making an adhesive-coated orthodontic bracket comprising:
- providing a metallic bonding surface on the orthodontic bracket for attachment to a tooth surface;
- sand blasting the bonding surface with a silica-based media;
- functionalizing the bonding surface in the presence of either an aqueous acid-modified, silane coupling agent solution having a pH less than or equal to 5.0 or an aqueous base-modified silane coupling agent solution having a pH greater than or equal to 8.0;
- and
- applying an orthodontic adhesive onto at least a portion of the bonding surface, the orthodontic adhesive including at least 30 weight percent filler and having an average water uptake of at least 0.5 weight percent relative to its original weight after hardening.
