Abstract
The invention relates to hardenabie ceramic bone substitute compositions having improved setting, powders for such compositions and methods for their manufacture and use in medical treatment. More specifically the invention relates to hardenable bone substitute powder and hardenabie bone substitute paste with improved setting properties, comprising calcium sulfate and heat-treated hydroxyapatite (passivated HA), which bone substitute is suitable for treatment of disorders of supportive tissue such as bone loss, bone fracture, bone trauma and osteomyelitis.
Claims23
A hardenable bone substitute composition comprising:
- a) a calcium sulfate hemihydrate;
- b) a passivated hydroxyapatite;
- c) an antimicrobial compound;
- and
- d) an aqueous liquid,
- wherein the setting times of the hardenable bone substitute composition are reduced compared to a composition with a), c), d), and a raw hydroxyapatite.
A method for reducing the setting times of a hardenable bone substitute composition comprising
- a) mixing calcium sulfate hemihydrate, passivated hydroxyapatite, and an antimicrobial with an aqueous solution;
- and
- b) allowing the mixture from step a) to set, wherein the setting times of the hardenable bone substitute composition are reduced compared to a composition with raw hydroxyapatite instead of passivated hydroxyapatite.
A method for reducing the setting times of a hardenable bone substitute composition comprising
- a) mixing calcium sulfate hemihydrate and passivated hydroxyapatite with an aqueous solution comprising an antimicrobial;
- and
- b) allowing the mixture from step a) to set, wherein the setting times of the hardenable bone substitute composition are reduced compared to a composition with raw hydroxyapatite instead of passivated hydroxyapatite.
A method for the treatment of disorders of supportive tissue comprising
- a) mixing calcium sulfate hemihydrate, passivated hydroxyapatite, and an antimicrobial with an aqueous solution;
- b) injecting the mixture from step a) into a supportive tissue;
- and
- c) allowing the mixture from step a) to set, wherein the setting times of the hardenable bone substitute composition are reduced compared to a composition with raw hydroxyapatite instead of passivated hydroxyapatite.
A method for the treatment of disorders of supportive tissue comprising
- a) mixing calcium sulfate hemihydrate, passivated hydroxyapatite, and an antimicrobial with an aqueous solution;
- b) allowing the mixture from step a) to set, wherein the setting times of the hardenable bone substitute composition are reduced compared to a composition with raw hydroxyapatite instead of passivated hydroxyapatite;
- and
- c) implanting the hardened bone substitute compositions from step b) into a supportive tissue.
