Abstract
The present invention relates to a method for coding a video signal using hybrid coding, comprising: reducing temporal redundancy by block based motion compensated prediction in order to establish a prediction error signal, deciding whether to transform the prediction error signal into the frequency domain, or to maintain the prediction error signal in the spatial domain for encoding.

A method for coding a video signal using hybrid coding, the method comprising:
- reducing temporal redundancy by block based motion compensated prediction in order to establish a prediction error signal that includes a plurality of predication error blocks, and
- for each of the prediction error blocks:
- deciding whether to transform the prediction error block into a transformed block in the frequency domain,
- transforming the prediction error block into the transformed block and encoding the transformed block into an encoded frequency domain block in the frequency domain in response to deciding to transform the prediction error signal into the transformed block in the frequency domain,
- encoding the prediction error block in the spatial domain into an encoded spatial domain block in the spatial domain in response to deciding not to transform the prediction error block into the transformed block in the frequency domain, and
- providing a first flag indicating whether the encoded spatial domain block is coded in the spatial or in the frequency domain.
A method for decoding a video signal using hybrid decoding, comprising:
- receiving a coded video signal comprising coded video data that include coded frequency domain data and/or coded spatial domain data;
- decoding the received coded video data to obtain decoded video data;
- reading a first flag present in the received coded video signal indicating whether a portion of the received coded video signal is coded in the spatial or in the frequency domain;
- in response to determining that the first flag indicates that the portion of the received coded video signal is coded in the frequency domain, performing an inverse transform of the decoded video data from the frequency into the spatial domain, and in response to determining that the first flag indicates that the portion of the received coded video signal is coded in the spatial domain, skipping an inverse transform of the decoded video data.
A coder for coding a video signal using hybrid coding, comprising:
- means for reducing temporal redundancy by block based motion compensated prediction and establishing a prediction error signal,
- adaptive control means for deciding whether to transform the prediction error signal into a transformed signal in the frequency domain and encode the transformed signal, or to maintain the prediction error signal in the spatial domain and encode the prediction error signal in the spatial domain, wherein a flag is provided, indicating whether a block is coded in the spatial or in the frequency domain.
A decoder for decoding a video signal using hybrid decoding, comprising:
- receiving means for receiving a coded video signal encoded by use of hybrid coding and including coded frequency domain data and/or coded spatial domain data, and
- adaptive control means for reading from the coded video signal a flag indicating whether at least a portion of the coded video signal data is coded in the spatial or in the frequency domain and adaptively determining from the flag whether the received coded video data represents a prediction error signal of the coded video signal in the spatial domain or in the frequency domain.
