Abstract
Data is stored in a hybrid drive that includes a magnetic storage medium and a non-volatile solid-state device using a temperature-defined data-storage policy. According to the temperature-defined data storage policy, the drive can perform operations for modulating the temperature of the drive, minimizing increased wear on memory cells in the non-volatile solid-state device, and/or preventing data stored in the non-volatile solid-state device from being lost.
Claims20
A data storage device, comprising:
- a magnetic storage medium;
- a non-volatile solid-state device;
- and
- a controller configured to:
- detect a temperature of the data storage device that is greater than a predetermined temperature;
- determine, based on the detected temperature, a maximum allowable number of memory blocks in the non-volatile solid-state device that store data, which are not also stored on the magnetic storage medium, and
- write data associated with a write command to the non-volatile solid-state device until the number of memory blocks in the non-volatile solid-state device that store data, which are not also stored on the magnetic storage medium, equals the maximum allowable number of memory blocks.
A data storage device, comprising:
- a magnetic storage medium;
- a non-volatile solid-state device that includes a memory block;
- and
- a controller configured to increment a program/erase cycle counter for the memory block by a temperature-dependent factor for each program/erase cycle experienced by the memory block based on a detected temperature of the data storage device.
A data storage device, comprising:
- a magnetic storage medium;
- a non-volatile solid-state device;
- and
- a controller configured to:
- detect a temperature of the data storage device;
- and
- change a rate of data transfer from a volatile solid-state device of the data storage device to at least one of the magnetic storage medium or the non-volatile solid-state device, when the detected temperature is less than a predetermined temperature.
