Information processing apparatus and method therefor

An information processing apparatus that communicates with a peripheral device, the information processing apparatus comprising:

• a receiving unit configured to receive model information and compatible identification information as device information from the peripheral device;
• a first search unit configured to search for a specific driver for the peripheral device corresponding to the model information;
• a second search unit configured to search for a generic driver corresponding to the compatible identification information;
• and
• a generation unit configured to generate a driver list for selecting a device driver to be installed, by using a device driver searched for by at least one of the first search unit and the second search unit,
• wherein the generation unit generates a driver list by using the specific driver found by the first search unit and the generic driver found by the second search unit, if a setting for types of device drivers to be used is enabled to make all driver types usable, and
• wherein the generation unit generates a driver list by using the generic driver found by the second search unit without using the specific driver found by the first search unit, if the setting for types of device drivers to be used is enabled to use only a generic driver.

A method for an information processing apparatus that communicates with a peripheral device, the method comprising:

• receiving model information and compatible identification information as device information from the peripheral device;
• searching for a specific driver for the peripheral device corresponding to the model information;
• searching for a generic driver corresponding to the compatible identification information;
• controlling, if a setting is enabled to use a generic driver, installation of the generic driver found in the generic driver search even if the specific driver has been found in the specific driver search;
• and
• controlling installation of the specific driver if the specific driver has been found in the specific driver search and if the setting is not enabled to use a generic driver.

A method for an information processing apparatus that communicates with a peripheral device, the method comprising:

• receiving model information and compatible identification information as device information from the peripheral device;
• searching for a specific driver for the peripheral device corresponding to the model information;
• searching for a generic driver corresponding to the compatible identification information;
• generating a driver list for selecting a device driver to be installed, by using a device driver that has been searched for in at least one of the specific driver search and the generic driver search;
• generating a driver list by using the specific driver found in the specific driver search and the generic driver found in the generic driver search if a setting for types of device drivers to be used is enabled to make all driver types usable;
• and
• generating a driver list by using the generic driver found in the generic driver search without using the specific driver found in the specific driver search if the setting for types of device drivers to be used is enabled to use only a generic driver.

A computer-readable storage medium storing a computer program that causes a computer to execute a method for an information processing apparatus that communicates with a peripheral device, the method comprising:

• receiving model information and compatible identification information as device information from the peripheral device;
• searching for a specific driver for the peripheral device corresponding to the model information;
• searching for a generic driver corresponding to the compatible identification information;
• controlling, if a setting is enabled to use a generic driver, installation of the generic driver found in the generic driver search even if the specific driver has been found in the specific driver search;
• and
• controlling installation of the specific driver if the specific driver has been found in the specific driver search and if the setting is not enabled to use a generic driver.

A computer-readable storage medium storing a computer program that causes a computer to execute a method for an information processing apparatus that communicates with a peripheral device, the method comprising:

• receiving model information and compatible identification information as device information from the peripheral device;
• searching for a specific driver for the peripheral device corresponding to the model information;
• searching for a generic driver corresponding to the compatible identification information;
• generating a driver list for selecting a device driver to be installed, by using the device driver that has been searched for in at least one of the specific driver search and the generic driver search;
• generating a driver list by using the specific driver found in the specific driver search and the generic driver in the generic driver search if a setting for types of device drivers to be used is enabled to make all driver types usable;
• and
• generating a driver list by using the generic driver found in the generic driver search without using the specific driver found in the specific driver search if the setting for types of device drivers to be used is enabled to use only a generic driver.
