Abstract
Method and apparatus for managing data in a memory. In accordance with some embodiments, a data object is stored in a first non-volatile tier of a multi-tier memory structure. A metadata unit is generated to describe the data object, the metadata unit having a selected granularity. The metadata unit is stored in a different, second non-volatile tier of the multi-tier memory structure responsive to the selected granularity.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- storing a data object in a first non-volatile tier of a multi-tier memory structure;
- generating a metadata unit to describe the data object at a selected granularity;
- and
- storing the metadata unit in a different, second non-volatile tier of the multi-tier memory structure responsive to the selected granularity.

An apparatus comprising:
- a multi-tier memory structure comprising a plurality of non-volatile memory tiers each having different data transfer attributes and corresponding memory cell constructions;
- a data object storage manager adapted to generate a data object responsive to one or more data blocks supplied by a requestor and to direct storage of the generated data object in a first non-volatile tier of said memory structure;
- and
- a metadata storage manager adapted to generate a corresponding metadata unit having a selected granularity to describe the data object and to direct storage of the generated metadata unit in a different, second non-volatile tier of said memory structure, the second non-volatile tier identified responsive to the selected granularity of the metadata unit.

An apparatus comprising:
- a multi-tier memory structure comprising a plurality of non-volatile memory tiers each having different data transfer attributes and corresponding memory cell constructions, the multi-tier memory structure comprising a first memory tier of rewriteable non-volatile memory cells and a second memory tier of flash memory cells;
- a data object storage manager adapted to generate a data object responsive to one or more data blocks supplied by a requestor and to direct storage of the generated data object in a selected one of the first memory tier or the second memory tier;
- and
- a metadata storage manager adapted to generate a corresponding metadata unit having a selected granularity to describe the data object and to direct storage of the generated metadata unit in the remaining one of the first memory tier or the second memory tier responsive to the selected granularity of the metadata unit.
