Abstract
Devices, systems and methods for dynamically stabilizing the spine are provided. The devices include an expandable spacer having an undeployed configuration and a deployed configuration, wherein the spacer has axial and radial dimensions for positioning between the spinous processes of adjacent vertebrae. The systems include one or more spacers and a mechanical actuation means for delivering and deploying the spacer. The methods involve the implantation of one or more spacers within the interspinous space.

An interspinous spacer system, comprising:
- an implantable expandable spacer having an undeployed configuration and a deployed configuration, the expandable spacer including
- a first member having a first vertebra receiving feature that includes spaced apart first sidewalls for extending along opposites sides of a first spinous process of a first vertebra, and
- a second member having a second vertebra receiving feature that includes spaced apart second sidewalls for extending along opposites sides of a second spinous process of a second vertebra,
- wherein at least one of the first and second members is movable relative to a longitudinal axis of the expandable spacer such that the first vertebra receiving feature receives the first spinous process and the second vertebra receiving feature receives the second spinous process when the expandable spacer is positioned at an interspinous space between the first and second spinous processes and mechanically expanded from the undeployed configuration to the deployed configuration.
An interspinous spacer system, comprising:
- an implantable expandable spacer having an undeployed configuration for insertion into an interspinous space between a first spinous process and a second spinous process and a deployed configuration for distracting the first and second spinous processes, the expandable spacer including
- a first member having a first recess configured to receive the first spinous process such that the first member extends along opposites sides of the first spinous process of a first vertebra,
- a second member having a second recess configured to receive the second spinous process such that the second member extends along opposites sides of the second spinous process of a second vertebra, and
- a drive assembly configured to mechanically drive the first and second members outwardly to distract the first and second spinous processes received by the first and second recesses while the expandable spacer is positioned at the interspinous space.
