Abstract
A rugged elastomeric infusion pump capable of storing sterile fluids under pressure for intravenous medical use within an elastomeric bladder, wherein said elastomeric bladder is surrounded by a rugged outer shell having a proximal and distal parts with respect to the elastomeric bladder, said distal part comprising one or more of a flow regulator, a modulator, and a flow meter for regulating, smoothing, and measuring the flow of fluids effused from the elastomeric bladder, wherein said rugged proximal parts are capable of absorbing impacts to minimize the force imparted to the elastomeric infusion pump.
Claims27
A rugged elastomeric infusion pump, suitable for containing a sterile fluid under pressure which is suitable for administration to a patient, the infusion pump comprising:
- a. an elastomeric bladder capable of retaining the sterile fluid at pressure, said elastomeric bladder capable of providing sustained consistent pressure for delivery of the fluid;
- b. a rugged outer shell surrounding the elastomeric bladder, said rugged outer shell having a proximal part with respect to the elastomeric bladder, and a distal part with respect to the elastomeric bladder;
- c. said distal part of said rugged out shell having one or more of a flow regulator, a modulator, and a flow meter for calculating the rate of flow of the fluid being expelled from said elastomeric bladder and calculating and displaying the volume of the fluid effused, or combinations thereof;
- d. said proximal and distal parts of said shell capable of absorbing impacts to minimize the force imparted to the infusion pump.
The elastomeric infusion pump of claim 6 where said flow regulator is capable of regulating the flow of fluid to about 0.1 to 100 ml per minute.
A rugged elastomeric infusion pump capable of storing and dispensing fluid under pressure, comprising:
- a. an elastomeric bladder, a rugged outer shell, a rugged inner shell, a flow regulator, a modulator, and a flow meter;
- b. said elastomeric bladder comprising a length, a width, and an opening at one end of said length, said elastomeric bladder capable of holding more than 250 ml of fluid, and capable of storing fluid under a sustained pressure of 20 PSI;
- c. said rugged outer shell having a proximal part with respect to the elastomeric bladder and a distal part with respect to the elastomeric bladder, and having a corresponding rugged inner shell having a proximal part with respect to the elastomeric bladder and a distal inner part with respect to the elastomeric bladder, and comprising a shock absorbing material disposed there between said rugged outer shell and said rugged inner shell;
- d. said proximal and distal parts capable of absorbing impacts to minimize the force imparted to the infusion pump;
- e. said proximal part comprising an outlet and an inlet, wherein the elastomeric bladder is contained within the proximal part and said elastomeric bladder opening is attached to said outlet end of the proximal part;
- f. said distal part being of substantially the same diameter of said proximal part and said distal part being attached to said proximal part, and comprising a flow regulator, a modulator, and a flow meter;
- g. said flow regulator capable of limiting the flow of fluid from about 0.1 to about 100 ml a minute;
- h. said modulator capable of smoothing the fluid pressure;
- i. said flow meter capable of measuring and recording the rate of fluid effusion and recording the total volume of fluids effused.
A pre-filled, rugged, elastomeric infusion pump comprising a sterile fluid to be administered to a patient, said pump comprising:
- a. an elastomeric bladder capable of retaining the sterile fluid at pressure and capable of expelling said sterile fluid at a consistent pressure for administration of said sterile fluids to said patient;
- b. a rugged outer shell having a proximal part with respect to the elastomeric bladder and a distal part with respect to the elastomeric bladder, and having a corresponding rugged inner shell having a proximal part with respect to the elastomeric bladder and a distal part with respect to the elastomeric bladder, and comprising a shock absorbing material situated there between said rugged outer shell and said rugged inner shell, wherein the proximal part surrounds the elastomeric bladder, and the distal part surrounds one or more of a flow regulator, a modulator, and a flow meter, or combinations thereof;
- c. said proximal and distal parts capable of absorbing impacts to minimize the force imparted onto the infusion pump;
- d. wherein said elastomeric bladder, flow regulator, flow meter, and modulator have been purged of all air prior to storage of said fluids under pressure.
