Abstract
Described are methods for modifying a substrate by exposing the substrate to a densified fluid. The substrate may be a polymer or a metal alloy, and the densified fluid may be carbon dioxide. Uses of such substrate modification include impregnation of the substrate with one or more drugs, impregnation of microcellular particles, and formation of microcellular compositions.
Claims20
A method of impregnating a substrate with a drug compound, comprising:
- positioning the substrate in a reactor;
- introducing the drug compound into the reactor;
- and
- introducing a densified fluid into the reactor, the densified fluid introduced into the reactor under conditions such that the drug compound is initially dispersed in the densified fluid, and thereafter transfers from the fluid and impregnates a matrix of the substrate.

A method of impregnating a substrate with at least one active compound, comprising:
- positioning the substrate in a reactor;
- introducing the at least one active compound in particulate form into the reactor;
- introducing a densified fluid into the reactor under conditions wherein amounts of the at least one active compound are dissolved in the densified fluid to form an active compound-containing densified fluid and wherein the active compound-containing densified fluid penetrates into a matrix of the substrate;
- and
- removing the densified fluid from the matrix of the substrate so as to leave amounts of the at least one active compound in the matrix of the substrate.
