The present invention is directed to sulfonic esters of metal oxides including those of formulas I and II:

A material according to formula I:
- wherein A is a corrolyl or metallated corrolyl;
- M is a surface comprising TiO2, BaTiO3, SnO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Fe3O4, ZrO2, CeO2, CdO, Cr2O3, CuO, MnO, Mn2O3, MnO2, NiO, SnO, SnO2, SiO2, or ZnO;
- and
- n is 0 or 1.

- wherein B is —NCO, C1-10alkyl, or
- wherein R1 is —COOH, —COOC1-6alkyl, C1-6alkyl, or aryl optionally substituted with halogen or C1-6alkyl;
- M is a surface comprising TiO2, BaTiO3, SnO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Fe3O4, ZrO2, CeO2, CdO, Cr2O3, CuO, MnO, Mn2O3, MnO2, NiO, SnO, SnO2, SiO2, BaTiO3, or ZnO;
