Abstract
Methods for treating the animal central nervous system against the effects of stoke, including associated cognitive, behavioral and physical impairments. Effective amounts of therapeutic agents are administered to the upper third of the stroke patient's nasal cavity to bypass the blood-brain barrier and access the central nervous system directly to avoid unwanted and potentially lethal side effects. Therapeutic agents include those substances that interact with iron and/or copper such as iron chelators, copper chelators, and antioxidants. A particular example of a therapeutic agent is the iron chelator deferoxamine (DFO).

A method to treat a patient with stroke comprising:
- administering at least one effective dose of deferoxamine (DFO) to the upper one-third of the patient's nasal cavity, wherein the at least one effective dose of DFO is 0.0001 to 1.0 mg/kg;
- thereby enabling at least one effective dose of DFO to bypass the patient's blood-brain barrier and delivering at least one effective dose of DFO to the patient's central nervous system;
- and
- treating the patient with stroke.
A method to treat a patient with stroke comprising:
- administering at least one effective dose of a metal chelator to the upper one-third of the patient's nasal cavity, wherein the at least one effective dose of the metal chelator is 0.0001 to 1.0 mg/kg;
- thereby enabling at least one effective dose of the metal chelator to bypass the patient's blood-brain barrier and delivering at least one effective dose of the metal chelator to the patient's central nervous system;
- and
- treating the stroke.
