Abstract
A method for substantially increasing the duration at which the transmission ratio for a “CVT comprising of two cones mounted on separate shafts that are coupled by a means for coupling” can be changed, by changing the axial position of said cones independent of each other, and by utilizing a means for tensioning that can provide and/or remove slack in said means for coupling as needed as to allow the axial positions of said cones to be changed independent of each other.
Claims9
A method for significantly increasing the duration that the transmission ratio can be changed for a “CVT comprising of two cones mounted on separate shafts that are coupled by a means for coupling, in a manner such that the apex of said cones point in opposite directions and each said cone rotates in and out of a moveable position”;
- said method comprises of:
- c) changing the axial position of said cones independent of each other;
- here the axial position of each said cone is changed when it is in a moveable position, regardless of the rotational position of the other said cone;
- d) utilizing a means for tensioning that can provide and/or remove slack in said means for coupling as needed as to allow the axial positions of said cones to be changed independent of each other;
- without said method, the transmission ratio has to be changed when both said cones are in a moveable position;
- the uninterrupted duration when both said cones are in a moveable position is very short and unpredictable, since the rotational position of said cones are independent of each other because they can rotate at different speeds;
- as such, said method allows said CVT to be used for higher rpm applications.
A CVT comprising of:
- a) A cone with one torque transmitting member mounted on one shaft/spline that is coupled to another cone with one torque transmitting member mounted on another shaft/spline by a means for coupling, in a manner such that the apex of said cones point in opposite directions, each said cone rotates in and out of a moveable position, and for each said cone a portion of its torque transmitting member is always engaged for torque transmission with said means for coupling for all transmission ratios of said CVT;
- b) a tensioning pulley, that can provide and/or remove slack in said means for coupling as needed as to allow the axial positions of said cones to be changed independent of each other;
- wherein, a simple and space-efficient CVT that can be made non-friction dependent and that can operate at a higher rpm is constructed.
A CVT comprising of:
- a) A cone with two opposite teeth mounted on one shaft/spline that is coupled to another cone with two opposite teeth mounted on another shaft/spline by a means for coupling, in a manner such that the apex of said cones point in opposite directions, each said cone rotates in and out of a moveable position, and for each said cone at least one of its teeth is engaged with said means for coupling during all operating conditions of said CVT;
- b) a tensioning pulley, that can provide and/or remove slack in said means for coupling as needed as to allow the axial positions of said cones to be changed independent of each other;
- wherein, a simple and space-efficient CVT that can be made non-friction dependent and that can operate at a higher rpm is constructed.
