Abstract
Methods and apparatus are presented to allow one receiver architecture to be used for the reception of two different SDARS signals. Common receiver functions can be utilized to process each signal, thereby obviating the need to duplicate hardware elements. For example, it can be assumed that both signals will not be received at the same time, thus allowing for considerable hardware reuse and lowering the cost of an interoperable receiver.
Claims22
A receiver capable of receiving broadcasts from different satellite radio services, comprising:
- a common S-band antenna and analog tuner;
- a common ND converter;
- partially shared TDM signal processing;
- and
- partially shared COFDM processing;
- wherein a common microprocessor is used to control tuner/baseband chip functionality and to perform audio decoding.

A method of receiving two SDARS signals using one receiver, comprising:
- sharing a defined set of receiver elements useable in the reception and processing of both signals;
- identifying unique aspects of one of the datastreams that could be processed by modifying receiver elements designed to process the other;
- modifying one of the datastreams so that it can be processed by receiver elements designed to process the other;
- and
- only receiving one SDARS signal at any given time.
