Abstract
A radio-opaque film with a laminate structure includes one or more layers of radio-opaque material between a pair of containment layers. Each radio-opaque layer may comprise particles of radio-opaque material and a binder, which holds the particles of radio-opaque material together. One or both of the containment layers may impart the radio-opaque film with paper-like or cloth-like characteristics. Alternatively, a sheet of paper-like or cloth-like material may be adhered to one or both of the containment layers. Methods for manufacturing radio-opaque films are also disclosed, as are systems in which radio-opaque films are used.
Claims20
A radiation shield or covering comprising a radio-opaque layer, the radio-opaque layer comprising:
- a polymeric binder;
- and
- a radio-opaque material disposed throughout the polymeric binder, the radio-opaque material comprising bismuth;
- wherein the radio-opaque layer provides at least 60% attenuation of x-ray radiation at an intensity of 60 kVp.
A method of manufacturing a radiation shield or covering, the method comprising:
- combining a radio-opaque material comprising bismuth with one or more solutions or mixtures to form a slurry with a solids content of between about 75% w/w to about 80% w/w, the one or more solutions or mixtures comprising a volatile portion and a non-volatile portion;
- and
- exposing the slurry to an environment such that at least some of the volatile portion is removed, thereby forming a layer comprising a radio-opaque material dispersed throughout the non-volatile portion.
