Abstract
Provided herein are carbon nanotubes conformally coated with diamond nanocrystals or silicon carbide, or both, methods of their preparation, methods of their use and compositions and materials comprising the conformally coated carbon nanotubes.
Claims30
A composition comprising conformally coated carbon nanotubes, wherein the carbon nanotubes are conformally coated by diamond nanocrystals or nanostructured silicon carbide, or a combination thereof.
A method of making a conformally coated carbon nanotube comprising the steps of:
- a. contacting a substrate with carbon nanotubes in a chemical vapor deposition chamber, the chamber comprising a filament and a source selected from the group consisting of solid carbon etched by hydrogen radicals, solid silicon etched by hydrogen radicals, and combinations thereof;
- and
- b. flowing hydrogen gas over the substrate at a substrate temperature below 200° C. for a time sufficient to conformally coat the carbon nanotube with diamond nano-crystals, silicon carbide, or a combination thereof.
