Abstract
A conductive fiber reinforced polymer composition may include a composite structure having a longitudinal axis, a lateral axis, and a through axis, the composite structure including a polymer matrix, a conductive filler incorporated into the polymer matrix, and a reinforcing material incorporated into the polymer matrix.
Claims21
A conductive fiber reinforced polymer composition comprising:
- a composite structure comprising a longitudinal axis, a lateral axis, and a through axis, said composite structure comprising:
- a polymer matrix;
- a conductive filler mixed with said polymer matrix, said polymer matrix and said conductive filler forming a conductive matrix;
- and
- a reinforcing material distributed within said conductive matrix,
- wherein substantially all of said reinforcing material is aligned along a plane substantially parallel to at least one of said longitudinal axis and said lateral axis, and
- wherein said conductive filler is substantially consistently distributed throughout said polymer matrix and said reinforcing material along at least said through axis.

A method of forming a conductive fiber reinforced polymer, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a polymer matrix;
- providing a conductive filler;
- mixing said conductive filler within said polymer matrix in a compounding process to form a conductive matrix;
- providing a reinforcing material;
- and
- applying said reinforcing material within said conductive matrix to form a composite structure, said composite structure comprising a longitudinal axis, a lateral axis, and a through axis;
- wherein substantially all of said reinforcing material is aligned along a plane substantially parallel to at least one of said longitudinal axis and said lateral axis of said composite structure, and
- wherein said conductive filler is substantially consistently distributed throughout said polymer matrix and said reinforcing material along at least said through axis.
