Abstract
The present invention relates to methods and compositions for inhibiting, treating, and preventing dental diseases in human and non-human animals, particularly domesticated companion animals. More particularly, the present invention relates to the unexpected discovery that the combination of micron-sized particulate bioactive glass and a topical bisphosphonate yields a composition that is capable of treating and/or preventing dental problems such as periodontal disease, tooth decay and tooth resorption in animals, particularly small mammals such as cats.
Claims26
A composition for the treatment of dental pathology in a mammal, said composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a micron-sized particulate of a bioactive glass comprising (a) a sol-gel derived bioactive glass comprising at least 65% silicon oxide, or (b) a melt-derived bioactive glass comprising 40-50% silicon oxide in combination with at least one bisphosphonate or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein sale bioactive glass of (a) or (b) optionally includes silver oxide.
A method of treating and/or preventing a dental pathology in a non-human animal subject in need thereof, said method comprising the step of administering a composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a micron-sized particulate of a bioactive glass sufficient to immediately and effectively occlude the dentinal tubules in said non-human animal subject, wherein said bioactive glass has an average particle size of less than 10 microns and further comprises at least one bisphosphonate.
