Abstract
The present invention relates to compositions and methods for the prevention and treatment of atrial fibrillation. In particular, the present invention provides therapeutic agents for the treatment and prevention of persistent and permanent atrial fibrillation and prevention of progression of atrial fibrillation to permanent atrial fibrillation.

A method of treating atrial fibrillation or preventing persistent atrial fibrillation in a subject, comprising:
- administering an agent that inhibits at least one activity of a galectin polypeptide to said subject, wherein said administering treats or prevents atrial fibrillation in said subject.
A nutritional supplement or food product comprising an agent that inhibits at least one biological activity of a galectin polypeptide.
