Abstract
Methods and a system for transfusing blood to a mammalian subject. The method includes obtaining a volume of donated red blood cells (RBCs), adding an enhancement composition to the RBCs to form a treated blood composition, incubating the treated blood composition to form an incubated blood composition, and administering the incubated blood composition to a patient. The system includes a functionally-closed, sterile Y-type tube set.
Claims25
A method for transfusing blood to a mammalian subject, the method comprising, at the point of care, the steps of:
- (a) adding an enhancement composition to a volume of red blood cells, forming a treated red blood cell composition, wherein the enhancement composition comprises a rejuvenating material selected from the group consisting of inosine, adenine, pyruvate, sodium phosphate, and mixtures thereof;
- (b) incubating the treated red blood cell composition, forming an incubated red blood cell composition;
- and
- (c) administering the incubated red blood cell composition to the subject.
A method for treating a disorder characterized by reduced tissue oxygenation in a mammalian subject, the method comprising, at the point of care:
- (a) obtaining a volume of red blood cells from the subject;
- (b) adding a volume of red blood cell (RBC) enhancement composition to the red blood cells, forming a treated blood composition, wherein the enhancement composition comprises a rejuvenating material selected from the group consisting of inosine, adenine, pyruvate, sodium phosphate, and mixtures thereof;
- (c) incubating the treated blood composition, forming an incubated red blood cell composition;
- and
- (d) administering the treated blood composition to the subject.
A method for improving the metabolic function of blood, comprising:
- (a) obtaining a volume of red blood cells from a mammalian subject;
- (b) adding an enhancement composition to the volume of red blood cells, forming a treated blood composition;
- (c) incubating the treated blood composition, forming an incubated red blood cell composition;
- (d) centrifuging the incubated red blood cell composition, forming a pellet of red blood cells, and a supernatant;
- (e) isolating the pellet of red blood cells;
- and
- (f) suspending the pellet of red blood cells in additive solution, forming a red blood cell suspension,
- wherein steps (b) through (f) are performed in a continuous process in an automated closed system in fluid communication with an intravenous catheter.
