Abstract
A system and method for routing packets within a router having a plurality of loosely-coupled route processors, including a first route processor, and a line card operably coupled to the plurality of distributed-route-processors. Each route processor includes an internal forwarding information base (IFIB). Each IFIB includes information that is used to route packets addressed to elements within the router.
Claims15
A data structure stored on a computer-readable medium, wherein the data structure maps locations of a plurality of elements to elements of a router, and directs incoming network packets to at least one element in the router, the data structure comprising:
- a field storing data representing at least one transport protocol;
- a field storing data representing at least one destination address;
- and
- a field storing data representing at least one destination port.
A computerized method for managing a router having a plurality of route processors, the method comprising:
- receiving a locally-addressed packet;
- determining that the packet lacks a defined flow;
- assigning a session to one of the plurality of route processors as a function of a router policy;
- and
- forwarding the packet to the route processor to which the session was assigned.
A computer-accessible medium having executable instructions to manage a router, the executable instructions capable of directing a processor to:
- receive a locally-addressed packet;
- determine that the packet lacks a defined flow;
- assign a session to one of a plurality of route processors as a function of a router policy;
- and
- forward the packet to the route processor to which the session was assigned.
A router having a plurality of route processors, wherein each route processor includes an Internal Forwarding Information Base (IFIB), a computerized method for translating sets of bindings into IFIB entries, the method comprising:
- combining identical bindings into flows;
- identifying superset/subset relationships and adding a list of route processors from superset flows to a list of route processors from a subset flow;
- and
- reviewing the flows to prevent conflicting flows.
A router, comprising:
- a plurality of route processors;
- means for receiving a locally-addressed packet;
- means for determining that the packet lacks a defined flow;
- means for assigning a session to one of the plurality of route processors as a function of a router policy;
- and
- means for forwarding the packet to the route processor to which the session was assigned.
A router, comprising:
- a plurality of route processors, wherein one or more route processors include an Internal Forwarding Information Base (IFIB);
- and
- translating means for translating sets of bindings into IFIB entries, wherein the translating means includes:
- means for combining identical bindings into flows;
- means for identifying superset/subset relationships and for adding a list of route processors from superset flows to a list of route processors from a subset flow;
- and
- means for reviewing the flows to prevent conflicting flows.
