## Abstract

According to one embodiment of the present invention, a computer-implemented method comprises generating an alternative visualization of a data set based on a specification of a selected first visualization of the data set and parameters comprising information pertaining to the data set.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A computer-implemented method comprising:
generating an alternative visualization of a data set based on a specification of a selected first visualization of the data set and parameters comprising information pertaining to the data set.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the parameters further comprise metadata for the data set.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the parameters further comprise statistical relations among two or more of variables of the data set.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising generating an explanation for the alternative visualization.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein
the specification of the first visualization comprises a set of visualization components, and
a specification of an alternative visualization is generated by applying a pre-defined heuristic rule to create a modified instance of the set of visualization components.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
generating specifications of a plurality of new visualizations by applying heuristic rules to the specification of the first visualization;
assigning scores to each of the new visualizations; and
producing a subset of the new visualizations based on the scores.
