## Abstract

An electronic device includes a display, a plurality of antennae arranged and constructed to emit a signal and to receive backscatter from the signal, and a processor operably coupled to the antennae to utilize the received backscatter to detect location and at least one of size and shape of an object spaced from the display.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An electronic device comprising:
a display;
a plurality of antennae arranged and constructed to emit a signal and to receive backscatter from the signal;
a processor operably coupled to the antennae to utilize the received backscatter to detect location and at least one of size and shape of an object spaced from the display.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the processor is arranged and constructed to repeatedly detect location and at least one of size and shape of the object and to utilize the repeated detected location and at least one of size and shape to identify a gesture by the object.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the processor is arranged and constructed to:
repeatedly detect location and at least one of size and shape of the object;
identify a gesture by the object based on the repeated detected location and at least one of size and shape; and
compare the gesture to known gestures to identify an associated command.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the signal comprises radio waves.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The electronic device to claim 1, wherein the backscatter signal comprises a received signal from which at least one of an electric field and a magnetic field is determined.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the plurality of antennae are arranged in an antenna array.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the antennae comprise transmit and receive antennae disposed on the display.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the antennae comprise transmit antennae disposed on a first layer and receive antennae disposed on a second layer on the display.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the antennae comprises transmit antennae and receive antennae disposed on the same layer on the display.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The electronic device according to claim 1, wherein location and at least one of size and shape of the object are detected based on at least one of electric field, magnetic field, and voltage differences determined based on the received backscatter.

### Claim 11

A method of detecting an object spaced from a display of an electronic device, comprising:
emitting a signal from and receiving backscatter at a plurality of antennae of the electronic device;
utilizing the received backscatter to detect location and at least one of size and shape of the object spaced from the display.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, comprising repeating emitting the signal and receiving backscatter and utilizing the received backscatter to identify a gesture by the object.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, comprising:
repeatedly detecting location and at least one of size and shape of the object;
identifying a gesture by the object based on the repeated detected location and at least one of size and shape; and
compare the gesture to known gestures to identify an associated command.

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, wherein the backscatter signal comprises a received signal from which an electric field and a magnetic field is determined.

### Claim 15 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, wherein location and at least one of size and shape of the object are detected based on at least one of electric field, magnetic field, and voltage differences determined based on the received backscatter.

### Claim 16 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, wherein emitting a signal from and receiving backscatter at a plurality of antennae of the electronic device comprises emitting the signal from a plurality of transmit antennae and receiving backscatter at a plurality of receive antennae.

### Claim 17 (depends on 11)

A computer-readable storage device having computer-readable code stored thereon, the computer-readable code executable by at least one processor of the portable electronic device to perform the method of claim 11.
