## Abstract

A system for remote monitoring of conditions at a site and transmitting alerts to interested parties' mobile devices via a social networking service is described. The system employs a wireless communications device, partially exposed outside a small, metal enclosure, to transmit SMS (text message) alerts to a social networking site. Interested parties, including other devices, receive the alerts by simply subscribing to the ‘user’ device, and alarm threshold conditions are established autonomously by the device. Thus, no configuration of the device by interested parties is required. Temperature alerts are generated by the device without user-configured or fixed thresholds. A wall-mounted installation of the device conceals the external antenna within the wall cavity.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A Monitoring System comprising:
a) One or more sensors;
b) A microcontroller programmed to adaptively learn and report significant excursions of at least one of said sensors; and
c) A wireless communications device configured to transmit wireless alerts to a monitoring site.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The Monitoring System of claim 1 wherein at least one of said sensors is a humidity sensor.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The Monitoring System of claim 1 wherein at least one of said sensors is an AC power sensor.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

Monitoring System of claim 1 wherein at least one of said sensors is a temperature sensor.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The Monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the monitoring site is a social network.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The Monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the monitoring site is a user's cell phone.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The Monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the system further comprises a memory in which sensor readings are stored and analyzed by said microprocessor to determine limits used to determine if sensor excursions are significant.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The Monitoring system of claim 1 further comprising an additional microprocessor located at said monitoring site, said additional microprocessor performing at least some of the functions related to the determination of limits.

### Claim 8

A Method of Monitoring comprising the steps of:
a) Learning normal operating range of one or more parameters of interest;
b) Detecting excursions outside said normal operating ranges of one or more parameters of interest;
c) Encoding said excursions outside the learned normal operating ranges as alarm conditions; and
d) Wirelessly transmitting said encoded alarm conditions to a monitoring site.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The Method of claim 8 wherein said normal operating ranges vary over time.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The Method of claim 8 wherein one or more AC power parameters are monitored.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The Method of claim 8 wherein temperature is the parameter of interest.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The Method of claim 8 wherein the monitoring site is a user's cell phone.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

The Method claim 8 wherein the said encoded alarm condition is a digital message.
