## Abstract

A system for controlling power from an AC voltage to an induction motor to reduce surge when power is restored to a power grid is disclosed including, a device for switching power to the induction motor that has a trigger controllable to enable the device to provide a variable amount of power to the induction motor. The system includes a second device for measuring the AC voltage at the source to determine when power is available, hence determining when the AC voltage is within operating range. Responsive to the AC voltage coming within operating range, the system delays for a time period then initiates power to the induction motor by controlling the device for switching power.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A system for controlling power from an AC voltage to an induction motor, the system comprising:
means for switching power to the induction motor, the means for switching power including a trigger, the trigger controllable to enable the means for switching at a point within a half-cycle of a waveform of the AC voltage based upon a trigger delay, whereas a full power is supplied to the induction motor when the trigger delay is zero;
means for measuring the AC voltage at the source;
means for determining when the AC voltage is within operating range; and
responsive to the AC voltage being within operating range, the system delays for a time period then initiates power to the induction motor using the means for switching power.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The system for controlling power from an AC voltage to an induction motor of claim 1, wherein the time period is a fixed time period.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The system for controlling power from an AC voltage to an induction motor of claim 1, wherein the time period is a random time period.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The system for controlling power from an AC voltage to an induction motor of claim 1, further comprising a means for communicating with a remote system.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The system for controlling power from an AC voltage to an induction motor of claim 4, wherein the time period is controlled by the remote system.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The system for controlling power from an AC voltage to an induction motor of claim 1, wherein the means for initializing power further comprises a means for soft-starting the induction motor, the means for soft-starting the induction motor gradually applying the power to the induction motor.

### Claim 7

A method for reducing restart loading to a power grid caused by an induction motor, the method comprising:
(a) inserting a solid state switch in series between the motor and a source of AC voltage;
(b) upon initial power from the source of AC voltage, delaying for a period of time;
(c) then starting the motor by decreasing a delay between a trigger of the solid state switch and the phase of the AC voltage;
(d) then operating the motor until a loss of power from the source of AC voltage, then repeating from step (b).

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein steps b-d are implemented by software running on a processor.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the period of time is a fixed amount of time.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the period of time is a random amount of time.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the step of starting the motor includes decreasing the delay between the trigger and the phase of the AC voltage, thereby providing a soft start to the motor.
